Cow prices show typical seasonal uplift, prime prices lose ground

In the week ending 20 February, the all-prime average GB deadweight cattle price fell by 1.2p on the week to average 373.2p/kg. However, the price is still 38p above the price for the same week last year.

Price drops were seen across most cattle types, with the largest price movement being in the overall young bull price (-2.5p).

Throughputs of prime cattle at GB abattoirs were estimated at 34,400 head, virtually unchanged on the week before (+0.1%) but up 2.3% on the same week a year ago.

Weekly deadweight price movements for GB prime cattle (w/e 20 February):

  • Steers (overall): 374.3p/kg (-0.8p)
  • Steers (R4L): 382.7p/kg (-0.8p)
  • Heifers (overall): 374.1p/kg (-0.9p)
  • Heifers (R4L): 383.8p/kg (+0.8p)
  • Young bulls (overall): 352.9p/kg (-2.5p)
  • Young bulls (R4L): 366.7p/kg (-0.7p)

Cull cow prices on the other hand enjoyed more stability, with the GB average deadweight price averaging 253.3p/kg (+0.3p on the week). Those of -O4L spec performed better, gaining 2.3p on the week to average 271.3p/kg. Cull cow prices typically strengthen during the first half of the year as demand for manufacturing beef rises after Christmas.

Cow throughputs at GB abattoirs were estimated at 10,200 head, virtually unchanged on the week (+0.4%) but 2.5% fewer than the same week a year ago.
