Cattle prices edge up over the Christmas holiday period

In the latest week ended 1 January, the deadweight all-prime cattle average stood at 408.4p/kg, up by 2p on the previous week and an increase of nearly 4p across the two-week holiday period overall.

There was a significant fall in throughput during the latest week compared to the week prior, with many abattoirs operating on a reduced number of days. Numbers coming through were fairly typical for the time of year across the two weeks overall. Prime slaughter in the week leading to Christmas Day is estimated at 25,800 head, with slaughter in the subsequent week at 19,600 head. Similarly, cow slaughter in the week to Christmas is estimated at 7,700 head, with the next week at 5,500 head.

Despite limited processing taking place, demand for cull cows has been robust, with prices strengthening. There was strong growth in deadweight cow prices during the week ended 1 January, with the overall average gaining 9p on the week earlier to stand at 265.5p/kg. A smaller 2p gain was also recorded in the previous week.
