Brexit boost for British lamb?

By Charlie Reeve

In the week ending 2 January, the deadweight price rose up by 15.1p on the previous week to average 487.0p/kg. This puts prices up 36.9p on the same week of the previous week.

With an EU-exit trade deal finally being reached over the Christmas period, the risk of tariffs being imposed on lamb exports was narrowly avoided. This may have added further support to lamb prices which were already well above the five year average. Delays at borders in recent weeks also appear to be easing which is helping to keep movement of products to the continent.

Total throughputs for the week ending 2 January are estimated at 176,300 head, down 9.9% on the previous year. Fewer killing days over the Christmas period compared to the previous year, due how the bank holidays fell, is the main reason for the lower throughput.

In the week ending 6 January, the Liveweight NSL/OSL SQQ price rose by 13p on the week to average 243.89p/kg. Auction market throughputs were considerably back on the previous week due to market closures over the Christmas period, at 72,900 head. During the same week, Cull ewes averaged £79.23/head.
