Beef trade lifts in value in May

As of January 2021 data, the way HMRC collects trade data has changed, which will be reflected in the trade statistics. Comparisons between this and historic data should be treated with caution, and may well be subject to future revisions.

Imports

The UK imported 15,200 tonnes of fresh and frozen beef in May, according to the latest data from HMRC. This is 2% (300 tonnes) less than the same month last year, and 7% (1100 tonnes) lower than April.

This decline was driven by fewer imports from EU countries, down 5% year-on-year for the month. Imports from non-EU countries saw strong growth, up 500 tonnes on the same month last year, although this was not enough to outweigh losses from the continent.

While volumes declined, the value of these imports lifted 9% compared with May last year to total £64.6 million.

Total imports for the year to date (Jan – May) were down 24% compared to the same period last year, totalling 69,300 tonnes.

Exports

In May, the UK exported 8,500 tonnes of fresh and frozen beef, 21% more than April but 4% less than May last year. However, the value of these shipments was 8% higher than the same month in 2020, totalling £29.7 million.

Exports to the EU totalled 5,800 tonnes, up 3% year-on-year, with the value of these exports lifting a significant 23% compared to the same month last year at £23.5 million. Conversely, the volume of exports to non-EU countries fell 16% year-on-year, totalling 2,700 tonnes. The value of these exports stood at £6.3 million.

For the year to date (Jan – May) export volumes remain down on the year, totalling 35,700 tonnes. This is 30% lower than the same period in 2020.
