Another week of gains for GB prime cattle markets

Wednesday, 12 August 2020

By Felicity Rusk

Prices rose across all cattle markets in the week ending 8 August. The GB all prime average cattle price stood at 368.9p/kg, up 2.4p on the week before. This puts prices achieved 43.5p/kg above the previous year, and 22.2p/kg above the 5-year average.

Prime price movements for the week ending 13 June:

  • Steers (overall): 369.3p/kg ↑ 2.8p
  • Steers (R4L): 382.0p/kg ↑ 2.4p
  • Heifers (overall): 369.9p/kg ↑ 2.0p
  • Young bulls (overall): 363.8p/kg ↑1.8p

Supplies continued to tighten, with abattoirs reportedly completing for supplies. Prime slaughter in British abattoirs was estimated at 31,320 head, 3% (-980 head) less than in the previous week.

Industry reports suggest that demand remains strong, as the foodservice sector continues to reopen. The Government’s “eat out to help out” scheme may encourage customers to trade-up meals, i.e. from a burger to a steak, which could affect demand for certain cuts.

The deadweight cow price rose by 1.3p on the week to average 266.8p/kg. This puts the price 37.3p higher than the same point last year, and 39.5p above the five-year average.

Prices for cows meeting the O4L specification averaged 282.5p/kg, 1.2p above the same week last year. Estimated cow slaughter totalled 10,370 head for the week, 600 head more than the previous week.
