Pig movement legislation
To make sure that we accurately record pig movements and can trace disease in the event of an outbreak, pig producers – small and large – need to ensure that their pig movements comply with UK law.
Whenever pigs are moved, they need to be accompanied by movement licences; these need to be recorded and confirmed on the electronic animal movement licensing system (eAML2), either by the producers themselves or by contacting the eAML2 bureau service.
If you process pigs for slaughter, you must ensure that all movement licences you receive are completed online via the electronic animal movement licensing (eAML2) system.
Producer requirements
Register online
If you are moving or receiving pigs for the first time, you need to register on the eAML2 website. Once registered, you will receive login details to manage your movements online. eAML2 is operated by AHDB and is available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Confirm movements
Both the sender and receiver of pigs must confirm the movement for it to be valid. Make sure you log in to eAML2 to confirm the delivery of each consignment of pigs you receive. As a sender, this must be done within 24 hours of pigs leaving your holding; as a receiver, you have three days to confirm.
Print your licence
A printed copy of your licence is legally required to travel with your pigs. The movement licence is generated in eAML2, either online or over the phone, and must be done in advance of the pig movement. If you cannot print your licence, the Bureau team can send it to you in the post.
Request support
If you do not have access to a computer or printer, you can call the bureau service on 084 4335 8400 to set up and confirm movements by phone. The helpline operates Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm. Calls are charged 5p/min plus your phone provider's access charge.
Being compliant is not just about ticking boxes, it is about helping to inform plans to reduce the spread of disease and ensure there is traceability throughout the supply chain.
If you have not already registered on eAML2, visit eaml2.org.uk or contact the bureau service today.
