In the second of this series of webinars developed by the GrassCheckGB team, Robert Hassall from Handley Enterprises, and Dr Taro Takahashi, Rothamsted Research, highlight the value and importance of measuring grass, and how to get it right. Measuring grass effectively leads to better informed and more effective grassland management and grazing decisions. The webinar will cover:
- Why you should measure grass
- A detailed guide to plate metering - key principles, how the plate meter works, equations, and the walk, including the pattern and number of plonks (readings) in relation to accuracy
- Alternative measuring methods - quadrants and satellites
- Utilising pasture.
Guest speakers
Robert Hassall
A former dairy farmer in New Zealand, Robert moved to the UK in 1990 and has been closely involved with the UK Dairy industry ever since. He established Handley Enterprises in 2016, predominately supporting the EU market with Jenquip plate meters. The company focusses on providing a support network for farmers whilst working with Jenquip New Zealand to implement improvements.
Dr Taro Takahashi
Taro is Research Scientist at Rothamsted Research's North Wyke Farm Platform (Devon) and Director of Graduate Studies at Bristol Veterinary School. He specialises in trade-off analysis between economic and environmental performances of agricultural systems and leads a team investigating potential unintended consequences of reduction in, or withdrawal of, livestock from UK agriculture.
The webinar will be approximately 35 minutes long, with time for questions at the end.
