Devon: manage maize ground to protect soils
Join us at Newlands Farm alongside agronomist Jon Myhill from the Maize Growers Association, where we will be looking at ways AHDB strategic farmer David Luxton can integrate some cover cropping post-harvest into his maize rotation, focusing on soil health, and mitigating run-off on his farm.
Maize is a valuable energy dense and high yielding crop, that forms a part of many cattle rations, but post-harvest stubbles, if left uncovered over winter months can be vulnerable to surface water run-off, soil erosion and nutrient leaching.
At the meeting we will cover:
- Comparison of under-sowing versus post-harvest establishment of cover crops
- Enhancing soil structure and organic matter – the economic and environmental benefits
- Tillage and establishment options
- Winter and spring forage/grazing opportunities
- Potential SFI options compliant with cover cropping and under-sowing
Please arrive from 10:30am for tea/coffee and registration for a prompt 11am start.
