SPP rise still yet to match cost of production

Wednesday, 13 April 2022

For the week ending 9 April, the EU spec SPP rose by over 7p to 157.73p/kg. With our latest estimated cost of production in the region of 203p/kg to 216p/kg, some very difficult decisions are having to be made by a number of pig producers.

The estimated slaughter this week was 203,000 head, up 5,000 head on last week, with carcase weights averaging 93.17kg. The backlog of pigs is still present on some farms and will take time for processors to work through.

The EU spec APP rose to 155.63p/kg for the week ending 2 April, an increase of almost 2p from the week before and narrowing the price gap of the two series to just over 5p.
