SPP ends the year at a new record high

Friday, 6 January 2023

GB deadweight pig prices saw marginal gains in December with the EU-spec SPP averaging 200.59p/kg for the four weeks ending 31 December, up 0.29p/kg compared to the previous 4-week period. Prices increased each week with the SPP reaching a new record high of 201.24p/kg in the final week of the year.

The APP however recorded a marginal decline, averaging 204.68p/kg for the four weeks ending 24 December, down 0.36p/kg compared to perivous period. Weekly movements were mixed with stability in week 1 and growth in week 3 outweighed by declines in weeks 2 and 4.

Estimated GB slaughter for the four-week period totalled 666,300 head. As to be expected with the reduced kill over the festive period, this is a significant drop (-71,500 head) compared to the numbers seen in the previous 4-week period and is the lowest kill recorded in the last 12 months. However, this fall in numbers was not evenly distributed. Weeks 1 and 2 saw an increase in numbers coming forwards but this was then followed by large declines in weeks 3 and 4.

Average carcase weights have continued to ease, down 1.35kg compared to the previous four weeks to 87.42kg. Carcase weights now sit 8kg below their peak from the beginning of 2022.
