SPP continues to rise as EU markets face challenges

The EU-spec SPP continued its upwards trajectory in the week ending 4 July. Prices recorded a 0.20p rise on the week, to average 165.50p/kg. Prices continue to track above the previous year, although the annual increase is eroding.

The continued uplift is in contrast with the current situation in Northern Europe, where the closure of a large German processing plant and suspension of Dutch exports to China are starting to weigh on prices. It is currently unclear how and when these situations will be resolved.

Estimated slaughter recorded a considerable uplift for the second consecutive week. Throughputs totalled 170,280 head, 3% (4,900 head) more than the previous week. Furthermore, slaughter was higher than the same time last year, the first time since late April. 

Our latest UK outlook highlights expectations of an uplift in clean pig throughputs in Q3 this year; perhaps the most recent week indicates the start of this improvement in supplies.

Carcase weights were on average 230g heavier than in the previous week, at 84.65kg. After a dip last week, this was back to being over a kilo above year earlier levels.

In the week ending 27 June, the EU-spec APP averaged 167.61p/kg, 0.24p more than in the previous week. In the same week, the SPP recorded a rise, although to a larger degree than the rise in the APP. As such, the gap between the two narrowed to 2.31p.

In the week ending 4 July, prices for 7kg weaners recorded a large uplift (+£1.71) on the week, to average £43.14/head. Prices for 30kg averaged £59.36/head.
