Wednesday, 23 December 2020

The GB EU-spec SPP fell again in the most recent week. In the week ending 19 December, the EU-spec SPP declined by 0.77p to average 148.49p/kg. The measure is now 14.4p below the same week last year, although it remains above the five-year average (+2.29p).

Estimated throughput dropped back slightly on the previous week by 1,500 head (-1%), at 183,800 head. Estimated slaughter remains low for the time of year, down by a significant 26,500 head (13%) compared to same week in last year, and well below the five-year average (-10,000 head).

Carcase weights averaged 87.52kg, a decline on the previous week by 360g. However, average carcase weights remain well above those seen last year, up 4.36 kg on the same week in 2019 and just over 5kg heavier than the five-year average.

For the week ending 12 December, the EU-spec APP stood at 154.41p/kg, down on the week by 2.07p. This now puts the APP 8.98p below the price achieved in the same week last year. Despite this, the measure remains above the five-year average by just under 5p (+4.80p). The gap between the SPP and APP narrowed in the most recent week, standing at 5.15p.

7kg weaners averaged £39.29 head in the week ending 19 December, 28p more than when prices were last published in the week ending 5 December. Unfortunately, the sample data for the 30kg weaners was not robust enough to publish a price this week.
