Q1 2025 Pork cost of production

Wednesday, 14 May 2025

The latest AHDB quarterly pork cost of production and net margin estimations have been published for Q1 2025.

These estimates use performance figures for breeding and finishing herds. They indicate that the full economic cost of productions for Q1 2025 is estimated to be 203p/kg deadweight, with margins per slaughter pig estimated at £1 per head and 1p/kg deadweight. The estimated cost of production has increased by 6p from 2024 Q4 where the estimated cost of production stood at 197p/kg.

Feed costs have risen this quarter and now make up an estimated 62% of total costs, which is an increase of around 3p. This rise in feed costs contributes to the majority of the rise in cost of production, however other costs such as breeding, straw and bedding and energy costs have also risen slightly this quarter. Fuel costs and interest rates have decreased this quarter but have been offset by the other increased costs.

This quarter the cost of production and net margin figures have been calculated using the SPP price instead of the APP as that data series has not continued in 2025. This change to SPP has caused a drop in margin of about £3/head.
