Pig prices steady on the week

After last week’s price drop, the EU-spec SPP proved to be relatively stable in the latest week. It was 137.86p/kg for the week ending 5 February.
GB estimated slaughter was 191,000 head, 500 more than last week and the highest throughput since before Christmas. Carcase weights fell very slightly to 95.50kg, 300g lower than the week before, but a substantial 5kg heavier than a year ago.
The EU-spec APP stood at 142.95p/kg in the week ending 29 January, reflecting the fall in the market overall. The gap between the APP and the SPP therefore narrowed to 5.08p.
The backlog of pigs on farm is persistent and likely to remain so for some time. Here we consider three possible paths it might take, depending on how processing capacity develops over the coming months.
