The recent recovery in GB pig prices has continued in the week ended 22 May, with a 1.23p rise in the EU-spec SPP to 151.74p/kg.

The price has now increased for 10 consecutive weeks, adding over 12p over this time, and is at its highest level since late November. While this will offer some welcome relief for producers, the current price is still well below the estimated pig production cost in Q1, which was 174p/kg. Prices are also still nearly 13p below year earlier levels.

Market reports continue to describe supplies as tight, which will be influenced by falling carcase weights. The average weight in the SPP sample for the week was 86.55 kg, 210 g lower than the week before and the lowest level since last September. Domestic demand also remains robust and reports indicate demand in Europe has started to pick up recently too.

The EU-spec APP also continued to increase in the week ended 15 May, rising by 1.69p to 153.89p/kg. As a result, the gap between the APP and the SPP narrowed to 3.38p.
