Pig prices continue to fall

Wednesday, 15 December 2021

By Bethan Wilkins

Finished pig prices continued to fall last week, with the EU-spec SPP dropping to 141.81p/kg for the week ended 11 December. This was a decline of just over a penny from the previous week and the SPP was more than 7p lower than the same week last year.

At 183,400 head, estimated throughput was 4% lower than the week before and 7% below this point last year. The average carcase weight stood at 91.90 kg, similar to last week but over 4 kg above 2020 levels. These high weights show that producers continue to face difficulties with backlogs of market-ready pigs on farm.

Under normal circumstances we would typically see weights fall at this time of year, with producers finishing their pigs early ahead of the Christmas season.

The EU-spec APP also continued to decline in the week ended 4 December, falling by around half a penny to 148.63p/kg. The gap between the APP and the SPP widened again, to 5.79p.
