Number of UK lambs steady in June 2021
Thursday, 6 January 2022
By Rebecca Wright
The total number of lambs in the UK as at 1 June 2021 was 16.4 million head, a 0.6% decline on year earlier numbers, according to Defra data. There was a rise in the size of the breeding flock, however this was nowhere near large enough to explain the low level of ewe slaughter recorded during 2021.
There were mixed results across the nations. The number of lambs in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all increased, by 3%, 1% and 3% respectively. Meanwhile numbers in England dropped by almost 4%.
The next AHDB outlook for the lamb market will be published at the end of January 2022.
