Nitrogen and phosphorus reporting for permitted farms

Tuesday, 7 February 2023

The Environment Agency (EA) updates permit holders on the Best Available Techniques (BAT) requirement to report nitrogen and phosphorus excretion from livestock on permitted farms.

The EA is working with industry trade bodies to create a new mass balance reporting mechanism and supporting information for farmers to meet the requirement.

While a small number of poultry farms in a specific catchment have been made aware they will need to report this year, the EA has confirmed that the reporting requirement will continue to be temporarily paused for all other farms until January 2024. The temporary suspension period will also apply to dust emissions reporting for pigs.

The EA will publish the reporting tool and guidance on how to report emissions in line with the new requirements later this year.
