The EU-spec SPP rose marginally in the week ending 2 May, averaging 164.05p/kg. The price is now nearly 26p above the five-year average.

Estimated slaughter rose by 3,400 head on the week to 170,700 head. This is 2,800 head below the same week last year.

Industry reports suggest that markets are operating relatively well considering current lockdown measures, but there are some concerns over cold storage space availability.

Carcase weights averaged 85.16kg for the week, up 100g from the week before. This is 1.1kg heavier than the same time last year.

In the week ending 25 April, the EU-spec APP also rose slightly on the week, up 0.21p to average 166.81p/kg. This widened the premium on the SPP to 2.81p/kg.

In the week ending 2 May, 7kg weaner prices dipped by 8p to average £42.50/head. This price is £7.20 above the same week last year. Weaners weighing 30kg averaged £61.20/head, down 55p from the last published price (week ending 18 April).
