Liveweight lamb prices tick up again

Thursday, 31 March 2022

Liveweight lamb prices increased again in the week ending 30 March. The OSL SQQ rose by nearly 6p to 267.90p/kg. Auction market throughputs were 123,200 head, 19% more than during the same week last year, when numbers were on the tight side following the UK’s departure from the EU.

On the other hand, deadweight lamb prices were steady to slightly weaker in the week ending 26 March. The OSL SQQ was only a penny lower week-on-week at 566.0p/kg. Those carcases meeting the R3L spec fetched an average of 568.9p/kg.

Estimated slaughter was slightly stronger again, at 228,250 head. This is 21% higher than the same week a year ago, again showing relatively good availability. The combination of Easter being just over a fortnight away and Ramadan beginning on 2 April will have increased demand.

Prices for cull ewes through the markets rose again to average £115.01/head, spurred on by the Ramadan demand.

Key nearby dates for demand:

  • Ramadan begins April 2nd and ends with Eid al-Fitr May 2nd
  • Easter April 17th
  • Eid Al-Adha begins July 9th
