Lamb prices strengthen slightly
Thursday, 28 April 2022
Old season lambs in the liveweight SQQ weight range, averaged 278.98p/kg in the week ending 27 April, nearly 3p higher than the week before. Auction market throughputs were 134,000 head, up by over a third on the previous Easter week.
Cull ewes fetched an average of nearly £115/head, about £1 less than the week before.
In the deadweight market, the OSL SQQ for the week ending 23 April was 597.9p/kg, 2.5p higher than the week before. The NSL SQQ was 648.2p/kg, nearly 5p higher than the week before, but around 40p lower than a year ago.
Estimated slaughter in the week ending 23 April was 195,400 head, 6,300 fewer than last week but 2,000 more than the same week a year ago. A rough estimate based on our forecast model, and considering slaughter in the year so far, would put the number of old season lambs yet to come to market in the order of 500,000 head.
