Lamb prices creep down
Thursday, 3 March 2022
Lamb prices have once again recorded declines in the most recent week. While prices do stand well below year earlier levels, they are still strong on historic terms. There is an increase in lamb availability, in part because at this time last year there was very low lamb availability. At 3.9m, the forecast size of the carry-over this year is bigger than last, although still on the smaller side in historic terms.
In the week ended 2 March the GB liveweight OSL SQQ slipped 3.7p, to 261.39p/kg. This is over 18p lower than the same week in 2021 but 47p above the five-year average. Meanwhile during the week ending 26 February the GB deadweight NSL SQQ dropped 15p, to 570.9p. Similar to the liveweight price, this is below year earlier levels but above the five-year average.
Estimated kill for the week ended 26 February ticked up slightly on-the-week to 218,900 head. This is a 20% rise on the year, reflecting that increase in lamb availability. This level of kill volume is in-line with the five-year average.
