GB prime cattle prices on par with spring high

GB finished cattle prices continued to firm in the latest week. In the week ending 7 August, the GB all-prime average lifted 2.2p to average 407.3p/kg. This is the same price as the first week in May, and the highest price achieved since the series began in 2014. The measure now stands 38p above the same week last year, and 56p above the five-year average.

Throughputs at GB abattoirs was estimated at 31,000 head for the week, 3.5% (1,100 head) less than the previous week. Estimated slaughter is below that seen last year, down 9% (3,200 head) when compared to the same week last year. Despite this, weekly slaughter levels are closely comparable to the five-year average.

Steers (overall and R4L) saw the largest weekly increase, both lifting 2.6p on the previous week.

  • Steers (overall): 409.0p/kg up 2.6p
  • Steers (R4L): 417.7p/kg up 2.6p
  • Heifers (overall): 407.1p/kg up 1.9p
  • Young bulls (overall): 400.3p/kg up 0.4p

Overall cull cow prices also lifted in the latest week, up 1.9p in the week ending 7 August to average 294.3p/kg. This is 28p above the price achieved in the same week last year, and a notable 57p above the five-year average. Those meeting the -O4L spec enjoyed a 1.6p lift on the previous week, to average 316p/kg. This is 34p higher than the same week in 2020.

Estimated cow kill at GB abattoirs stood at 10,800 head, up 7% (700 head) on the week before, but 5% less when compared to the same point last year. Weekly cow throughput is running 5% above the five-year average.
