GB pig prices continue down

Wednesday, 3 February 2021

In the week ending 30 January, the EU-spec SPP continued down by a further 1.18p from the week before, to average 140.51p/kg. This puts the measure 22.10p below where it was at the same point last year.

Estimated throughput for the week totalled 170,100 head, down 7% on the week before and down 5% from the same week last year. This is the first time this year our estimates have been below 2020 levels, with reports indicating kill has been curtailed by COVID-19 related challenges.

Carcase weights averaged 89.54kg, 620g lighter than the previous week, but 3.97kg heavier than the same point a year ago. There has been a lot of interest in the potential impact of heavy pigs on the SPP lately - this is explored further here.

In the week ending 23 January, the EU-spec APP averaged 144.24p/kg, a decline of 3.56p on the week. This was a much larger decline than the SPP recorded in the same week, and so the gap between the SPP and the APP narrowed to 2.55p. This is the smallest difference since June last year.

We have been able to report a 7kg weaner price for the first time this year. In the week ending 30 January, 7kg weaners averaged £38.71/head, just over £3 less than a year ago.
