GB finished pig prices inch upwards

Wednesday, 30 June 2021

By Duncan Wyatt

In the week ending 26 June, the EU-spec SPP rose by 0.58p on the week before to average 157.57p/kg. This puts the measure 7.73p behind the price recorded for the same week last year, although 7.36p above the five-year average for the week. This will be cold comfort for producers still contending with high input costs, and possibly yet to feel the effects of weakening pig prices on the continent.

Estimated slaughter at GB abattoirs totalled 180,600 head, up 3% on the week before, with market reports suggesting an increase in kill days at one plant in particular. Average carcase weights were slightly lighter again on the week, at 86.25kg.

In the week ending 19 June, the EU-spec APP rose by 1.09p on the week before to average 160.67p/kg. The APP is now 6.70p lower than the price recorded a year ago. During the same week, the EU-spec SPP recorded a larger increase (+1.17p) and so this narrowed the gap between the SPP and the APP to 3.68p/kg.

Unfortunately, there was insufficient data to produce a 30kg weaner price this week. However, a 7kg price was available at £38.76/head, £1 more than the last time a price was available three weeks ago.
