GB deadweight cattle prices ease

In the week ending 9 July, GB deadweight cattle prices decreased slightly, however remain at historically high levels.

The average price for prime cattle procured deadweight in GB fell by 1.6p on the previous week to average 442.3p/kg, however this was still 42p above where it was this time a year ago.

Within this average,  overall steers lost 2p to average 442.5p/kg, young bulls decreased by 3.7p to 437.8p/kg overall, R4L steers eased by 1.1p to 454p/kg, while heifers dropped by just 0.1p to average 443.8p/kg overall.

An estimated 31,500 prime cattle were processed during the week, down 1.5% from the week before, but up 1% from the same week a year ago. In addition, an estimated 9,600 cull cows were processed during the week, down 1% from the week before, as well as being down 4% from the same week a year ago.  

Cow prices also lost ground on last week, with the overall GB average price at 364.5p/kg in the week ending 9 July, down 2.8p. This was still 72p above the price recorded for the same week a year ago. Animals of -O4L spec averaged 383.1p/kg, down 2.6p week-on-week, but remained well above the 5-year average range.

Whilst prices are down this week on last, they are still strong across all cattle, being an average across all prime animals of 33.9p up from the start of the year.
