Deadweight lamb prices strengthen

The GB NSL SQQ dropped back 7.91p in the week ending 28 July, averaging 252.74p/kg. This puts the measure 28p above the same week last year, and 61p above the five-year average. This follows the end of the Eid al-Adha festival last week which could have eased demand over the past few days.
Estimated throughput at British auction marts lifted 13% (+7,500 head) on the week, totalling 116,400 head. Despite this lift, throughput remains down on the year, 25% less than the same week last year, which in 2020 marked Eid. As such, estimated slaughter for the week stood at 206,600 head, a significant 23% (61,000 head) less than the week before, and down 27% compared to the same week in 2020, again due to the timing of the festival.
On the deadweight front, prices continued to firm. In the week ending 24 July, the GB average NSL SQQ lifted by 12p to average 560.5p/kg. This now puts the measure 82p higher than the same week last year.
Cull ewe prices averaged £93.37/head, up £6.87 on the previous week. Total throughputs stood at 30,000 head, up 2% on the week before.
