Danish pig herd contracts

As of 1 April 2022, the Danish pig herd had contracted compared to last year, to 12.5 million head, according to Statistics Denmark. Every category and age group was smaller in number.
Prices for finished pigs, although having rallied sharply recently, had been low. Now, with very high prices for inputs, profitability has been challenged since the summer of 2021.
Although it is being tested, there is still thought to be underlying strength in Danish pig meat production, with reports suggesting that only limited reductions overall could be expected. Pig production is apparently still popular, with many willing new entrants eager to take over from those leaving.
However, the number of pigs available for either slaughter or export in the short to medium term can of course be expected to fall.
