Blog - Making sense of the market and trade information

Wednesday, 7 September 2022

Cecilia Pryce has 31 years’ commercial experience working in global trading, shipping, commodity exports, compliance and logistics. Cecilia’s extensive knowledge and distinctive skillset allow her to provide unique insights into today’s complex global cereals markets for a multitude of audiences.

Cecilia is Head of Research, Compliance and Shipping at Openfield, Britain’s only national grain marketing and arable inputs cooperative.

I have been trading and shipping grain since graduating in Agricultural Economics in 1991 from Wye College, London University. I have a wealth of experience in the arable sector and have spent many years trying hard to impart such information from the farm gate through to government.

I currently work for the UK’s largest cereal and arable inputs cooperative – Openfield. I have dirty hands from doing the job and understand what happens daily with arable products moving from farm to domestic destinations and overseas. I have traded, and negotiated, the benefits and issues about taxes, TRQs, standards, assurance schemes, ships, logistics, supply and demand and anything to do with moving grains. But more importantly, I have a passion to pass on what I know to make sure we as the UK grains industry, and the country, get the next moves right as quickly and efficiently as possible. Time is ticking fast, and this industry needs the right people in the right places to make the right decisions on what and how UK farmers’ levy is invested.

I spent over two years trading cereal commodities in Australia post deregulation of the Australian Wheat Board. This was a very educational time and involved everything from lobbying the Australian Government in Canberra regarding access to shipping facilities and phytosanitary requirements, to dealing with the commercial impact that the changes had on the Australian grain industry and infrastructure. Throughout my career, I have constantly analysed global cereal trade flows and domestic UK usage requirements to be able to identify trading opportunities.  As such, I am aware of the likely impact of any potential market changes that may happen due to a change in trade policy or domestic agricultural policy.

Joining the AHDB Cereals & Oilseeds Sector Council means I can help represent and focus on the industry’s priorities using the Shape the Future consultation results and by speaking to so many of you. AHDB is listening and changing. We are trying hard to understand the industry’s needs by building effective programmes to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Delivering the future of farming

Book today for AHDB’s Delivering the future of farming event on 10 November 2022.

Please join us (either online or in person) to hear how your vote has shaped the work we’ll deliver with your levy.

In April and May you told us what you’d like AHDB to focus on to benefit your business, through our Shape the future consultation. Our sector councils have taken on board all the valuable feedback, and used it to create new sector strategies to deliver a better future for farmers.

Come along to hear more, and join the discussions.
