Breeding for a better block

Richard Tucker is joined by AHDB's Fern Pearston who explains the benefits of using Herd Genetic Report data in your breeding decisions and how this can lead to a tighter calving block.

Top tips to breed for a tighter block

  • Make sure you are using the right index for your system, for:
    • All year round calving, use £PLI
    • Autumn block calving use £ACI
    • Spring block calving use £SCI
  • If you are looking for a tighter calving block look for sires with good fertility ratings
  • Balance this with the elements that are required by your milk contract
  • If you milk record regularly register for a Herd Genetic Reports to get a detailed breakdown of your herds genetic make-up
  • Utilise your most fertile cows for breeding, whilst balancing this with other things important for your breeding goals
