Undersowing maize
Join us to learn about how undersowing maize can help keep your most valuable assets – soil and nutrients - on your fields.
Maize is a substantial part of many cattle rations but post-harvest stubbles, if left uncovered over winter months can be vulnerable to surface water runoff, soil erosion and nutrient leaching.
Host farmer Tom Kimber will lead a farm walk with Hannah Jones from Farm Carbon Tool Kit and Giles Simpson from Pearce Seeds to look at different cover crop establishment methods, soil health indicators and the financial benefits of under sowing maize.
You’ll also hear from Wessex Water and Catchment Sensitive Farming about the funding options available in your area.
The meeting will cover:
- Comparison of undersowing versus post-harvest establishment of cover crops
- Enhancing soil structure and organic matter
- How to reduce soil erosion, particularly on sloping fields
- Retaining soil nutrients, in particular nitrogen
- Winter and spring forage/grazing opportunities
- Funding options from Wessex Water from their Phosphate Reduction Scheme.
Registration and coffee will begin at 10:30am for a prompt 11:00am start. Lunch will be provided – please contact us as soon as possible with any dietary requirements.
