Arable Conversations, live Q&As and a virtual site to tour

Pulling together expertise and knowledge for the arable industry

The challenges of the past couple of years have been very significant: everything from COVID-19 and Brexit to market uncertainty and weather extremes has tested the resilience of our arable production businesses. After a very successful virtual event in 2020, Arable Scotland is back in 2021 with a mix of specialists, scientists and industry stakeholders.

This year, the event will major on markets and current drivers, integrated pest management, sustainable crop rotations and reaching net-zero.

1. Live stream events and topical Q and A sessions
2. An interactive platform to visit virtual stalls and stands from the exhibition partners and demonstrators.

The programme includes:

11:00 am: Opening and welcome video – highlighting the latest research and featuring input from SEFARI, Hutton, SRUC, AHDB and the Farm Advisory Service.

11:30 am - 12:30 pm: Arable Conversations: Alternative Markets and Cash Crops – led by Chris Leslie (AHDB). Panellists: Robert Ramsay (SoilEssentials), James Webster (AHDB), Wendy Rusell, (Rowett Institute, University of Aberdeen) and Julian Bell (SRUC). Book here 

1:00 - 2:00 pm: Arable Conversations: Integrated Pest Management - Deriving the Benefits - led by Fiona Burnett (SRUC). Panellists: Caroline Drummond (LEAF), Andrew Moir (Arable Sector Climate Group) and David Howard (Hutchinsons).

4:00 - 5:00 pm: Arable Conversations: Sustainable Rotations Integrating Cover Crops with Cash Crops - led by Tracy Valentine (James Hutton Institute). Panellists: Pete Iannetta (James Hutton Institute) and Cathy Hawes (James Hutton Institute).

6:00 - 7:00 pm: Arable Conversations: Net-Zero - Making Carbon Pay - led by Ken Loades (SEFARI). Panellists: Alison Milne (Crafty Maltsters), Matt Ward (Hutchinsons) and David Aglen (Balbirnie Home Farms)

The core event partners are the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and the James Hutton Institute.

The other key team members and sponsors are Hutchinsons, the Farm Advisory Service (FAS), the Scottish Environment, Food and Agriculture Research Institutes (SEFARI) and the Scottish Society for Crop Research (SSCR).
