US shutdown disrupts key agricultural insights: Grain market daily

Market commentary

  • UK feed wheat futures fell yesterday, partly due to a stronger sterling against the US dollar and the euro. The Nov-25 contract closed at £165.25/t, down £0.60/t (0.4%) from Friday’s close
  • Chicago wheat futures (Dec-25) fell by 0.5%, while Paris milling wheat futures (Dec-25) closed unchanged. The lack of change in Paris milling wheat futures was due to rising competition from the Black Sea region offsetting the falling euro against the US dollar amid concerns about the French government. Saudi Arabia bought 455 Kt of wheat in a tender, mainly from the Black Sea region (LSEG)
  • Meanwhile, Chicago struggled to find direction amid the disruption to the publication of statistics caused by the US government shutdown, which began last Wednesday. There were no weekly crop progress figures last night. The publication of the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report from the USDA, scheduled for 9 October, is now in question
  • Paris rapeseed futures (Nov-25) gained €4.50/t to €462.50/t yesterday, while Feb-26 futures increased by €2.25/t to €464.50/t. Winnipeg canola (Nov-25) also increased by 0.4%
  • On Monday, there was only a slight change in Chicago soyabean futures. However, the US harvest and a lack of Chinese demand continued to weigh on the market. Soyabeans were also under pressure due to the successful progress of planting in Brazil
