South Korea pig meat imports down in 2020

By Bethan Wilkins

South Korea decreased the volume of pig meat (including offal) imported in 2020 by 21%, to 449,000 tonnes. Shipments from the EU were more significantly affected, falling by 28%, while trade with the US was 14% down. The level of decline was fairly consistent throughout 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic has dampened demand for imported pork in South Korea, due to reduced demand from restaurants, which are the primary users of imported product. The latest USDA estimates also show a 3% increase in domestic pork production in 2020.
