According to the latest data from BCMS, births to dairy dams lifted slightly in Q2. Total registered births to dairy dams stood at 309,000 head, 1% higher than Q2 last year.

April saw the largest increase, up 5% (5,600 head) on the same month in 2020, standing at 116,300 head. Conversely, births in May dropped back 4% (3,500 head) on the year to total 93,900 head for the month. This is the lowest number of registered births seen in May for 7 years.

Despite higher births year-on-year, total births in Q2 remain below the five-year average by 1%. This follows the trend we’ve seen in recent years with a higher proportion of calving’s seen in Q1 (February/March) and Q3 (August/September). We will publish further analysis showing how the calvings are split between block and all-year-round calving systems shortly.

Total births for the year to June stand at 712,400 head, 4% higher when compared to the same period last year, and 4% above the five-year average.
