Births to dairy dams in GB lifted significantly in the first quarter of 2021, according to the latest data from BCMS. In Q1, registered births to dairy dams totalled almost 403,400 head, 5.9% (22,392 head) more than the same period last year. This is highest number of births seen in Q1 in at least 10-years and 7.5% (28,185 head) above the five-year average.

February saw the largest increase in registered births to dairy dams; 7% higher than the same month last year, despite having one less day due to 2020 being a leap year. March also saw an increase of 6.7% year-on-year.
The latest data follows a similar patter to what we’ve seen in recent years, with a higher proportion of calvings seen in February/March and August/September. However, the uptick in registered births through February and March is likely related to recent changes to requirements within milk contracts.
