Pig prices tread water

Wednesday, 24 March 2021

Pig prices remain relatively stable for yet another week. In the week ending 20 March, the EU-spec SPP was 139.60p/kg, just 0.19p above the week before.

Estimated slaughter in the week was 198,300 head, only 1,200 head lower than the previous week, but nearly 15,000 head more than the same week last year.

Although they have been inching down, average carcase weights remained high at 89.07kg in the latest week.

In the week ending 13 March, the EU-spec APP fell by -0.42p to 143.69p/kg. This narrowed its premium to the SPP to 4.28p.

Unfortunately, once again it was not possible to publish either a 30kg or a 7kg weaner price.
