Pig price increase slows in latest week

The EU-Spec SPP put on just 0.78p in the week ending 28 May, bringing the average to 176.73p/kg. This price, while apparently high in historic terms, is still some way short of the latest estimated cost of production of 240p/kg deadweight in May.

Estimated clean pig slaughter in the week was 183,900 head, 5,300 more than the week before. The average carcase weight on an EU dressed basis, was 90.18kg, 880g lighter than the week before.

The EU-Spec APP averaged 183.92p/kg in the week ending 21 May, a weekly increase of 3.49p. This widened the spread between the APP and the SPP to 7.97p.
