Milk Forecasting Forum discuss the challenges facing farmers in the 2023/24 season

Wednesday, 8 March 2023

The AHDB Milk Forecasting Forum (MFF) met on the 7 March to discuss the factors impacting on future GB milk production. The main points of conversation were focussed around:

  • Recent trends in herd size and milk yields. In particular, the discussions focussed on how farmers may adjust their herds and feeding strategies as margins are eroded by high input costs and the continued labour shortages.
  • How declining milk prices could impact production post-flush.
  • How the lack of moisture and shortage of silage carry-over could impact production, both in the short term and in the back half of the season. High fertiliser costs were also discussed in relation to forage availability this year.
  • The potential longer term impact of environmental legislation on herd size and structure.

We've released a pack of the information discussed at the forum, which you can download from the Milk Forecasting Forum webpage.

We will be updating our production forecast later this month (March 2023)
