GB pig prices fall again
Wednesday, 29 September 2021
In the week ending 25 September, the EU-spec SPP fell by 0.74p on the week before to average 153.57p/kg. The price is now 6p below where it was in the same week last year.
Reports suggest that some abattoirs are in a position to take batches of heavily discounted pigs from highly motivated sellers. Most likely, less processing is intended for these carcases, as skilled butchery staff are still in short supply.
Slaughter at GB abattoirs was estimated to be 181,200 head during the week, 5% higher than the week before and 13% above the same week a year ago (which was particularly low). As mentioned last week, bear in mind that these are estimates, the accuracy of which can be affected by unusual circumstances.
Carcase weights were heavy again, averaging 90.23kg, 540g heavier even than the week before, and a substantial 3.85kg heavier than the same week a year ago.

In the week ending 18 September, the EU-spec APP fell by 1.82p from the week before, averaging 159.84p/kg. This measure is now 4p lower than the same week a year ago. The gap between the APP and SPP widened to 5.53p.
In the week ending 25 September 7kg weaners averaged £37.53/head, a similar level to three weeks ago, but £3.39 lower than a year ago.
