GB finished pig prices hold steady

Wednesday, 29 April 2020

The EU-spec SPP remained unchanged in the week ending 25 April, averaging 164.00p/kg. The price remains nearly 27p above the five-year average.

Throughputs were broadly unchanged too, falling 2,000 head on the week, to 167,000 head. This is 0.5% (800 head) higher than the same week last year, though note this week last year contained the Easter Monday bank holiday.

Industry reports suggest that markets are still functioning remarkably well despite the coronavirus outbreak, while also continuing to indicate tighter supplies. It remains to be seen how the order to keep US processing facilities open will affect the supply of US pork, which quickly turned from one of abundance, to one of forecast shortages.

Average carcase weights fell slightly on last week, losing 130g to average 85.06kg.

In the week ending 18 April, the EU-spec APP picked up, averaging 166.60p/kg. Its premium to the SPP narrowed to 2.60p.

In the week ending 25 April, 7kg weaner prices decreased by a further 19p, to average £42.58/head. There was insufficient data to publish a price for 30kg weaners.
