Further declines for finished pig prices
Wednesday, 9 December 2020
By Charlie Reeve
The EU-spec SPP decreased by 0.97p on the previous week to average 151.05p/kg, for the week ending 5 December. This now puts the SPP 9.62p below the same week last year, but still up 4.72p on the five-year average.
Estimated throughput jumped up on the previous week to average 190,900 head, an increase of 17,900 head on the previous week. This level of slaughter is more in-line with expectations for the time of year. However, throughput was still 1,800 head below the same week last year.
Carcase weights are now averaging 88.26kg, an increase of 200g on the previous week and nearly 4.1kg on the year. While we have seen a general increase in carcase weights across this year, the current levels are probably heavily influenced by the reported backlog in slaughter-ready pigs waiting on farm.

For the week ending 28 November, the EU-spec APP averaged 156.56p/kg, a decrease of 1.87p on the previous week. The EU-spec APP is now down by 4.61p compared to the same week last year. The gap between the SPP and APP has stayed the same week-on-week with the APP remaining at a 4.54p premium to the SPP
Unfortunately, we were unable to publish a price for 30kg weaners again this week. 7kg weaners averaged £39.57/head for the week ending 5 December, a very marginal increase of just 1p on the previous week. The 7kg weaner price is currently down £2.03 on the same week last year, but still up by £2.64 on the five-year average.
