Falling pork imports into South Korea

Thursday, 27 August 2020

By Bethan Wilkins

The South Korean pig meat market was weaker during the first half of 2020, with fresh/frozen pork imports down by 22% compared with January to July last year, totalling 262,000 tonnes.

Although Korea found 14 pig farms infected with African Swine Fever last September, Pig Progress reports that this outbreak seems to have been contained and no further pig farms have been found infected since October 2019. Pig slaughter for January-June was estimated as 4% higher than year earlier levels according to KMTA estimates. The increased domestic supply may have limited import requirements, alongside disruption due to the coronavirus pandemic and high global pork prices because of the Chinese ASF outbreak.

All of the main suppliers have been affected, with shipments from the EU back by 31%, at 110,500 tonnes.
