EU pig slaughter similar to last year across July and August

By Bethan Wilkins
EU pig slaughter for July and August together totalled 40.1 million head, virtually unchanged from the same period a year earlier. Increased throughput in the major markets of Spain and Denmark, as well as some smaller producers, balanced out a large reduction in German slaughter.
The number of pigs slaughtered during the first eight months of the year totalled 164.0 million head. This was 2% higher compared with the same period in 2020.
Looking at pig meat production, volumes across July and August totalled 3.69 million tonnes, again little changed from last year. This brought production for the year to date to 15.46 million tonnes, 3% higher than the first eight months of last year.

These figures largely pre-date the sharp price declines now being seen across Europe. Recent reports generally indicate that supplies are large in relation to demand levels.
