Annual dairy calf registrations hit 10-year high

Wednesday, 9 February 2022

BCMS calf registration data for the final quarter of 2021 (October – December) shows births to dairy dams have tracked the 5-year average for the period with 353,422 recorded births.

Although there was little change in the Q4 figures to previous years, total registrations for 2021 were just over 1.5 million births, a 10-year high. This is up 2.9% (43,122 additional registrations) compared to 2020 and 3.2% (46,537 additional registrations) higher than the 5-year average (2016-2020).

It is evident that the favoured spring and autumn calving blocks have supported the year’s increase, with Q1 and Q3 registrations increasing by 5.9% and 4.2% respectively compared to 2020.
