The Farm - strategic farm launch

Tim Downes joins our strategic dairy farm network and shares why a focus on fertility and further improving milk from forage are just two of his ambitions.

Tim operates a spring block calving herd of nearly 260 Irish and New Zealand based Friesian cows crossed with Norwegian Reds that are averaging a yield of 6500 litres with 4% butterfat, 3.4% protein and just over 4500 litres from forage.

‘We prefer to breed our cows quite small; I’ve always thought this is best if you are trying to get the most from grazing. Our cows average 536kg so they aren’t massive and that suits us.’

Tim who has been farming with his family here in Shropshire since the 50’s explained he has always had a strong focus on getting as much as he can from forage and working with the natural enviroment.

Over the hour session he walked everyone through his team, their ambitions to improve fertility rates, and his recent switch to successfully using sexed semen on cows and heifers to achieve enough replacements for both The Farm and his second farm at Webscott.

‘Using sexed semen works for us as it gives easier calving and breeds the best cows. We also select our bulls based on ease of calving and growth rates.’
