About Norwich Monitor Farm
- Hill Farm became a Monitor Farm in May 2023
- The farm is one of four making up the farming operations Crown Point Estate
- 1345ha farmed area with a diverse rotation
Michael Balls manages 1354ha on sandy loam just outside of Norwich. His arable rotation is diverse and includes wheat, winter barley, oilseed rape, spring naked oats and triticale for seed. Peas, beet, potatoes, maize and mint also feature.
The cultivation policy on farm is flexible, with Michael and his staff utilising everything from strip-tilling oilseed rape to more conventional ploughing and drilling with a power harrow. Cover crops are used widely on the farm and are grazed by sheep.
Over the course of the three-year programme, Michael is looking to maintain margins by improving current standards and incorporating new practices. New ventures for 2023 include growing sunflowers, pumpkins and sweetcorn for locals to come onto farm and pick their own. Michael considers himself an open book and is looking forward to sharing his own ideas and taking inspiration from others in equal measure.
