Huggate Monitor Farm Meeting – Managing muck and compaction
You are invited to join us for the second Huggate Monitor Farm of the season!
We look forward to welcoming you to catch up with Gary Shipley, as we enter his final winter season as a monitor farmer. Join us for the first meeting of the New Year as we discuss how organic materials can improve soil health and what decisions can we take to help manage compaction because of the application.
What will this meeting cover?
John Williams (ADAS): Maximising the fertiliser value of organic amendments
- Knowing what you’re applying: the importance of soil and nutrient testing to aid in matching nutrient supply to crop demand.
- Typical nutrient content of food-based digestate and livestock slurries.
- Application timings, rates, and technologies to maximise uptake by the crop.
- How can optimising organic matter levels and tyre pressures help to alleviate compaction and the relative effectiveness of different organic sources at improving soil structure and trafficability?
Harry Henderson (AHDB): Tyres and compaction outdoor workshop
- Choosing your kit: best use of power, ballasting and track or wheels?
- Tyres: design options, pressures, and tyre inflation kits
- Fuel use: what is the average fuel use, what is the impact of tyres and pressures on fuel use
- Putting it into practice: assessing soil condition and headland management
Registration and lunch will be available from 12:00 with presentations commencing promptly at 12:30. Please bring suitable clothing and footwear for the outside session.
