Q2 dairy births see lowest record in almost a decade

Wednesday, 31 August 2022

BCMS calf registrations to dairy dams for the second quarter of 2022 (April – June) stood at 305,469 head. This is down 1.1% from the same period last year and the lowest number of new registrations recorded in Q2 since 2013. In addition, Q2 2022 registrations are 1.6% behind the 5-year average, which supports the evidence that more farms are moving to a block based calving system.

In the year to date (January – June) a total of 707,846 calves have been registered to dairy dams, only 0.6% lower than last year’s record high* and 2.5% above the 5-year average.
