Pig prices rise

Wednesday, 16 February 2022

The EU-spec SPP rose in the latest week ending 12 February, by 0.91p to 138.77p/kg.

GB estimated slaughter was 185,300 head, only 850 down on last week. This brings estimated slaughter for the year so far to 1.05m head, slightly ahead of the same point in 2021. Carcase weights fell again, by 640g to 94.86kg, although this is still 5kg heavier than a year ago.

The EU-spec APP stood at 143.47p/kg in the week ending 5 February, having risen by 0.52p. The gap between the APP and the SPP therefore widened to 5.61p.

The share of heavy pigs in the SPP sample is much higher than usual, but how do the average prices for those pigs compare with lighter animals?
